Es gibt wenig Bücher, die ich nicht zu Ende lese. Dieses gehört dazu. Langatmig, langweilig und die Charaktere wie aus einem Handbuch für Hobby-Autoren. Keine Spannung, es passiert kapitelweise gar nichts, die ganzen Beziehungen sind völlig konstruiert. Und so klischeehaft alles. Das ist so mies, schade um die Lesezeit. Keine Kaufempfehlung!!!!!

Die Autorin führt schnell in die Situation ein und die Geschichte beginnt direkt sich zu entfalten. Es ist bald eine leicht schaurige Atmosphäre zu spüren, die jetzt herrlich zur Herbstzeit passt, obwohl das Buch wohl im Frühjahr spielt...

Ein Teil der Erzählung besteht aus den Rückblicken aus Großmutter Roses Sicht, beginnend Weihnachten 1979, als sie Daphne Hartall kennenlernt, die ihr Leben verändern würde.

In den anderen Teilen geht es um die schwangere Saffron Cutler und ihren Freund Tom, die das Cottage ihrer Großmutter No. 9 Skelton Place bewohnen dürfen. Eines Tages werden bei Arbeiten für eine Erweiterung der Küche im Garten zwei Skelett gefunden. Da sie schon länger tot sind, stehen sie nicht unter Verdacht, aber die Polizei will mit allen früheren Bewohnern sprechen. Auch mit der an Alzheimer erkrankten Rose, die in einem Heim lebt. Als Saffrons Mutter Lorna davon erfährt kommt sie überstürzt aus Spanien heimgereist. Auch aus ihrer Sicht gibt es eigene Kapitel.

Die Autorin macht deutlich, was alles an familiären Erinnerungen verloren geht, wenn die ältere Generation nicht mehr präsent ist. Das kann ich aus eigenen Erfahrungen nur bestätigen. Bei den verschiedenen aus der Vergangenheit auftauchenden Personen muss man sich konzentrieren, um den Faden nicht zu verlieren. Die wirren Äußerungen von Rose treiben die Geschichte voran.

Man rätselt mit, was die Personen wohl miteinander zu tun haben. Die Geschichte gewinnt an Komplexität. Nach einer unerwarteten Wendung kann das Ende überzeugen. Ich habe mich von der Autorin wieder gut unterhalten gefühlt.

It is not particularly unusual for the marketing blurb to describe a book that they think people will want to read rather than the one the author actually wrote, but this is one of those more rare occasions where the story is a significantly better, more rounded (and certainly less melodramatic) affair than its blurb suggests.

This is the second book I have read in recent weeks that has been influenced to a degree by the real life story of Mary Bell. When young couple, Saffy and Tom, set up home in the former home of Saffy's grandmother, Rose, they have no idea what they are about to unearth and the shocking path of discovery that they will be led down.

If you are looking for an action-packed page turner that moves along at a rollicking pace, then this probably isn't the book for you. Whilst it is not exactly a slow-burner as such, the author has taken a considered approach and, for the most part, the layers of the mystery only unfurl very gradually. There are plenty of interesting twists and turns, but I suspect that the pace of the story may not be to everyone's liking. Even though there was never a point where I wasn't enjoying the read, there were times when I felt it could have benefitted from an increased tempo.

The characterisation is impressive throughout. Each individual protagonist is well-drawn and fully formed, making them entirely credible and relatable. The storyline has also been intricately plotted and holds together nicely. It has to be said that one or two events lean towards being a touch too convenient, but are necessary mechanics to move the plot forward. However, in the overall scheme of things, these instances are forgivable.

All in all, Claire Douglas has succeeded in producing an engaging and, at times, emotional mystery that held my interest and is easy to recommend.

Either I have completely misunderstood part of this story, or there is a bit of a plot hole. Generally speaking, I found it an interesting read, particularly liking the reveal towards the end (I won't be more explicit in case you haven't read it yet). For me though, the bit where Melissa identifies Rose in a photograph just doesn't work with the timeline we've already been given. It doesn't change the plot at all, but bearing in mind that this is a pivotal point in the story its a shame that its impossibility has been overlooked. Still a good story though.

It’s easy to be picky when reviewing books- this doesn’t deserve pickiness. The storyline is clever and complicated; told between two timelines. The author throws in a number of good twists, that I certainly didn’t see coming.
It’s really a cold case scenario whereby two skeletons are found underneath a patio when the house owners are making renovations. The question is who were they, why were there and who was responsible for burying the bodies. The skeletons have been in situ for 30 years.
So follows the intricate details, particularly of the characters involved because there’s something very unsettling going on- more than dead bodies.
Really enjoyed this book and grateful to find a competent writer amongst the tripe turned out over the past months.

I am amazed that this book has the number of top reviews it has. I am struggling to finish it and I am an avid reader. The language is childlike, the plot confusing and not in any way riveting. I wonder what I am missing. How this book is at the top of the charts beats me
