This was a very good start to a series, and I discovered a new author - that's reading-bliss pure.
We have all heard about Roswell. What we haven't hearid is about the existence of an - most likely - empty sort of mothership a bit further than Mars. When finally, after all those years, a team of scientists is put together to undertake the months-long journey and investigate this ship, they find more than they expected. It falls on the linguist to take action so that the team can survive - and hopefully find the way back to Earth.
Great characters in this book, a very good narration style, and an also very good plot made this a page turner I was very reluctant to leave for any reason whatsoever. I will definitely get the other books in this series; although it can be read as a stand-alone, it's clear that the story is ongoing, and I want to know what happens next!

The first book by Jennifer Foehner Wells was a sheer delight to read. While I would have liked to, to read much more and in depth about certain things, that can easily be attributed to my own addiction to lengthy novels. This take on a first contact combines several ideas I have seen over the years in an intriguing and engaging way. Reminiscent of a much better written Perry Rhodan and several other books with a similar premise. The combination, is what makes this book work so well for me, the characters, the setting, the hints at what might come in the future are well combined and leave me wanting for more.

I've always loved space opera. It's a sub-genre where writers can spill all their creativity and fantasy onto the page, and this sweet little novel by Jen Foehner Wells is one of those. She takes the idea of a first contact and turns it around in a brilliant twist that opens up a nearly limitless scope for sequels. I can see this on a movie screen! No–I WANT to see it on a movie screen!
Four out of five stars because I think her secondary characters need a little more personality, but otherwise…great book!

I felt something was wrong on the first couple of pages already. There is a ship hiding out in the fringes of the solar system which is supposed to be a government secret, yet a NASA scientist is allowed to go around blabbing to potential recruitee? Then a crew of mostly, it seems, hostile people get send across the solar system, and the reports they make back to NASA, and the orders they receive back, are hilariously unprofessional. The rest of the book is mostly teenage drama about the two protagonists and whether or not they are going to have sex. And when.

Honestly, this is a sloppily written book with no value whatsoever. If you're looking for some awkward sex scenes, maybe you'll like it. But I doubt it.

Spannend, aber insgesamt leichte Lektüre mit viel Stereotypen und wenig Überraschungen. Der Schluss wirkt etwas dünn, als hätte sich die Autorin keine Zeit und keine Seiten mehr gegönnt und schon auf den zweiten Teil geschielt. Trotzdem insgesamt unterhaltsam, auch wenn es kein Buch von grossem Format (4 Sterne) ist oder gar genial (5 Sterne) ist. Ich werde mal den zweiten Teil anfangen ...

Usually I read fantasy books, don't know what caused me to read this book, but I'm really happy I did, because that book is fantastic!
Couldn't put it away till it was finished. Mesmerizing story, believable characters and Action.
The only disappointment was as I reached the end of the book :-)
But hopefully in 1-2 years I can buy the sequel!
Highly recommended!

Ich kann mich den anderen Rezensenten nur anschließen - ein wirklich gutes Buch. Für meinen Geschmack zu viel Beziehungsdrama, dafür zu wenig Action und die Nebencharaktere sind ein wenig simpel geraten. Davon einmal abgesehen liest es sich sehr gut und die Handlung ist spannend. Ich bin gespannt auf die Fortsetzung.

I received this book free from bookbub (they do offers where you can get the 1st book in a series for free in the hope that you'll enjoy it enough to buy the rest of the series. I have found quite a few where this works for me - I get to try without handing over my hard-earned for something I might not enjoy, and if its hooks me in I'll keep reading the rest of the series. If it doesn't then I haven't lost anything but my reading time. This approach has introduced me to some enjoyable authors and book series on a no-risk basis that maybe I wouldn't have found otherwise.)
Having said all that, I'm about half way through this book and undecided whether I'll keep going.

It started out as a promising concept - without giving too much away, NASA recruits a team of mission specialists to go investigate an apparently derelict spaceship thats been sitting in the asteroid belt beyond Mars for about 60yrs. One of the specialists is a gifted linguist who can hopefully establish communication if they find anything on the ship to communicate with. However, its now deteriorating into endless power struggles, 'office politics' between the various team members (who's in charge, who's on who's side, who agrees/disagrees with decisions, who blames who when something goes wrong) and a very unpleasant semi-lecherous and frankly creepy attempt at a love interest between the linguist and the design engineer.

I think I'll keep going and get to the end of this one - hopefully the second half of the book will wake up a bit and become more SciFi rather than the annoying soap opera just set in space that it is at the moment (anyone remember Deep Space 9?). If not, then I won't be buying the rest of the series, and (thanks bookbub) nothing lost but a few hours worth of reading time.

*UPDATE 2021-07-08*
It did indeed pick up a bit in the second half of the book. The creepy semi-lecherous love interest part is still bubbling away somewhat annoyingly, but the 'office politics' and power struggles appear to have been resolved. I got to the end of this book and immediately decided to buy the next in the series which, so far, is holding my interest very well. New set of problems/challenges, new solutions to go with them, new revelations. Its a becoming a bit of a page-turner.

There are lots of really, really good things about this book: the world-building, the complexity, the plot, the aliens… The ingenuity of the alien ship and the way the lifeform aboard messes with her head (and therefore ours) makes for exciting reading.

There are also some things I liked less, like the somewhat wayward depiction of the group of astronauts selected for the mission. I couldn’t decide whether to call them stereotypes or just ‘would NASA really not weed these people out?’ But then, with the sort of people appointed to positions of power these days, and the possibility that NASA actually wants to the mission to fail, well, I suppose you can just about get away with them. They do make for a lot of inter-personnel (deliberate) tension, and they certainly have very different objectives from each other. Jane, being a civilian, is allowed to have different objectives, of course.

The basis of the communication between the alien and Jane is a form of telepathy. That leads to some interesting scenes, where eventually you wonder what is real and what is not. There are some very icky mammoth man-corroding slugs which appear to be real. As I said, the world building (and the alien science & technology) is very well done. Some reviews have hammered the writing, but I didn’t notice anything too clichéd (apart from the whole set-up).

Fluency is an excellent story, with some ingenious twists on the ‘what really happened at Roswell’ theme. In the end it leads to a series. I’m not sure I’m sufficiently sold on Jane’s adventure to continue it, but I do recommend the books to others who wonder what those little green men might turn out to be.

I’m working through a huge TBR pile, and have only one rule: never, ever read during the day. I have a life, dogs, a family, and work that’ll be horribly neglected, as well as books of my own to write. Evenings are for reading. ‘Fluency’ however, messed up my nice, tidy rule. I read it from cover to cover without the normal intervention of housework.

It’s an extraordinarily gripping tale about a woman, Jane, whose language and interpretation skills and previously outstanding professional history cause her to be chosen as joint lead in an expedition to investigate an apparently deserted alien spaceship.

How she deals with the challenges and the internecine conflicts within her own team, her own burgeoning romance and the wonderfully detailed world of the alien ship is nothing short of superb.

I can’t afford it, and I have a million other books to read first but, dammit, I’m getting ‘Remanence’ right now.

I downloaded Fluency as a freebie after reading a few pages to get a taste of the prose, okay, so I’m fussy, but I get bored easily if a book does not engage me and the writing is aimed at adolescents. I found myself totally engrossed and enjoying the ride. As mentioned by some other reviewers, some of the characters could be a bit more fleshed out, but this didn’t really detract from a great storyline. I sometimes have difficulty imagining people and other descriptions of the ship etc, but not with Fluency. I’ve already ‘purchased’ the next in the series and imagine myself devouring Jennifer Foehner Wells’ other literary servings devotedly.

Very focused on a single character very descriptive and personal. I have read some reviews I felt were unfairly critical, but in reflection, I can see this being the book you either love or hate, especially if you expect that standard sci-fi formulae: make your own mind up. Very feminine in style, romantic and quite erotic in some places. A guilty read for me that I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy. I found it difficult to put down.
