[PREVIOUS REVIEWS]
When I was reading some reviews here on Amazon about this product, I got a little bit worried; “product did not match”, “product wires are different” and such. I can tell you, it’s probably a wrongly bought or shipped product.
[THE PACKAGE]
As you can see in the picture, the contents of the box comes with the floodlight, an instructions manual, warranty, a package with screws, wall plugs and a few rubber gaskets to take the wallmount a bit off the wall.
[INSTALLATION]
The product I have bought matches exactly what I have ordered and what I have seen in the instructionsvideo on the Steinel website. The installation was absolutely simple; click-out the terminal block, connect the wires from the source to the terminal block, click the terminal block back in. Literally ‘plug and play’.
Installing it to the wall is just as simple, but the quality of the wallmount seems to be a little bit less strong since it’s made out of plastic, unfortunately. However, this does not bring the product itself down in quality rating.
After installation, I just clicked in the floodlight onto the wallmount and secured it with the small screw on the bottom of the light. And done! Installation took just a few minutes (and I’m not an official/certified electrician).
Note: When working with electricity, it’s always recommended to let a certified electrician do the job. I’ve had one running around in my house due to renovations, so he double checked the installation.
[THE LIGHT ITSELF]
In terms of brightness; pretty bright, I must say. It does light up my driveway. I cannot talk about lumens, but my driveway is about 8 meters long and 4 meters wide. Everything is clearly visible when the light turns on (installation is done at about 250cm from the floor off).
The sensor is movable; left, right, up and down. And so does the light. You can turn it around and push it down. There is a lot of flexibility on the movement. However, it doesn’t move during a strong wind. When moving the light or sensor, it clicks/locks in every few milimeters.
[MOTION]
At first, the motion did not detect anything. I had to ‘play around’ with the settings-slider on the bottom of the sensor. After I’ve played around and also found the angle that matches my needs, it detected movement pretty fast. So it’s a matter of minutes for you to figure out the proper settings. Steinel claims it will detect motion up to 10-12 meters, but I would say it would detect up to 6-8 meters away (left/right and when sneaking in slowly). Again, this is in my case, it may have to do with how the sensor is set-up, the current light outside and the angle of the sensor.
[OVERALL, CRITICS]
Overall I would say it’s a huge improvement. Maybe I would buy a second one and install it as a ‘slave’; these Steinel lights are able to connect with eachother.
I would give the light a 5/5, but a 8.5/10 when rating up to 10.
There are some improvements, for example the plastic construction and wallmount. It does look weather proof, but consider taking some precautions when installing it when there is no shettle around the wallmount.
Another critic is that it doesn’t tell you what cables can fit. Some would use the 3x 1.5mm and some do have a cable running outside of 3x 2.5mm. When using the more thick cable, you can run into small issues when making it fit. This is where the rubber gaskets come in place. But I would like to see an easier (or better instructed) way to make thicker cables fit as well.
The best way is when the cable comes directly out of the wall. Installing it from the sides/bottom is also possible and works, but it requires a little technique to get it done when you’re using 2.5mm wires.
As always; let a certified electrician do the job.
